My heart goes out to everyone affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and around the world. In the wake of this tragedy, pet bloggers have joined together with World Vets, an international veterinary assistance charity, for "Paws for Japan" on March 17, to help raise awareness and funds to help animals in need.
Help Urgently Needed
With the death toll in the thousands and food, water, and medical supplies in high demand, Japan needs our help. There are hundreds of charities to help humans - here are some reputable aid organizations selected by the About.com Guide to Nonprofit Charitable Orgs.
Unfortunately, in times of crisis, people will try to capitalize on others' good will. Be informed about what charities you give to - protect yourself from scams so those who need the help receive it.
Pets Affected by the Quake and Tsunami
Pets are a very important part of Japanese culture. Stories of lost, frightened injured pets, such as this video of a dog who wouldn't leave his injured canine friend, are heartbreaking. The risks of death from injury, disease, exposure, or lack of safe food and water are real and time sensitive.
Thankfully, World Vets has been monitoring the situation in Japan closely since the earthquake. They deployed their first responder team to Japan on March 16, and are working closely with local veterinary and animal welfare groups.
According to World Vets founder, Cathy King PhD DVM, "The plan is to get everyone on the same page as far as a sheltering and rescue plan so that animals are not "rescued" and then displaced and never reunited with owners. We want everyone working together, using record keeping and the same system so that it is an organized effort."
Due to the radiation and nuclear threats, World Vets is not recruiting new volunteers at this time for Japan, but welcome new volunteers to their team. They are urgently seeking supplies: de-worming medications, vaccinations, fluid replacements, wound treatments, and cages.
World Vets are also in urgent need of donations. Please visit the World Vets Japan Disaster Relief status update and donation page for more information. This is just the start for long term support in Japan. World Vets helps animals around the world, 365 days a year, and donations are always welcome.
