Even though these tiny ID chips have saved and reunited thousands of pets with their humans, there is still a bit of mystery, even suspicion, surrounding this technology.
Mini Microchip Overview
The chips are placed just under the skin over the shoulder blades using a syringe. The chips are scannable with a hand-held device. They do not transmit location information like a GPS or record any kind of data, only store the chip registration number. When scanned, the registration number is transmitted the short distance to the hand-held scanner.
The chip ID number is stored in a registry maintained by the chip manufacturer. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) has also organized the Universal Pet Microchip Lookup directory. The registry contains the information that you (or the shelter or rescue group) has provided. In the event that your pet is lost or stolen, once scanned, the number is checked and you will be contacted via this contact information.
It important to update any new contact information with the registration agency -- the chip ID stays the same all of the time -- the pet never needs to be re-microchipped to update the information.
