Thrombocytopenia is the medical term for low platelet count. Platelets are the blood component responsible for clotting. A low platelet count may mean excessive bleeding or bruising, among other things. There are many causes for this condition, some of them life-threatening. After I posted this glossary entry on the About.com Vet Med Facebook page, and people began to share their pet's stories about dealing with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. That is when the body's immune system, for a variety of possible reasons, attacks and destroys its own platelets.
