In December, Mindy was found in an apartment, staunchly by her owner's side. The problem: the man had died approximately 2 weeks prior, according to sources who made the discovery. She was reported as being calm when the police arrived, and trotted after the ambulance as it left the scene.
She was picked up by animal control and was slated to be euthanized. She was rescue-adopted at the last minute, but was later found to be left outside in the snow at her new home, with only a picnic table for shelter.
That's when the Pets Alive animal shelter jumped in and re-rescued Mindy. They noticed immediately that she was not well. In fact, she was seriously ill, as were other dogs at the original shelter Mindy was placed at. Dr. Karen Dashfield helped the Pets Alive shelter with these cases, and it is now thought that the disease Mindy and other dogs had was Streptococcus Equi Zooepidemicus, a rare and very contagious disease.
On January 13th, Pets Alive posted an update that Mindy was back from the hospital and doing well, but still weak with a "possible auto-immune issue" that may have resulted from all that she has been through. Mindy is still in need of a home. Can you help?
This is a heartbreaking story. And a story of survival. I wish the best for Mindy, and all animals currently waiting for a forever home. I also sent my best wishes and thanks to people involved in this story (and rescue workers around the country) for their the tireless efforts helping animals. It is both an exhausting and rewarding job.
In addition to finding homes for animals, shelter and rescue groups are always in need of donations. Donations of your time, materials, or money. Right now, according to the web site, Pets Alive is in need of Kong type toys for dogs. Other shelters may need food, cleaning supplies, or pet supplies such as bedding and dishes. Every little bit counts. Search the web for your favorite shelter and see how you can help a pet in need today. It may just save a life.

I’m so grateful that you are keeping this story front and center. This poor dog!
This poor dog’s story really touched my heart. She deserves so much better. I’m not good with dog toys, so I made a small donation to Pets Alive so they can choose what they need.
Thank you for your comments. Thanks too, for helping spread the word and for your donations that help animals in need. You guys are the best!
