What could cause my dog's lips to be ulcerated?

Thursday January 8, 2009
VetMed Forum member NATEWEH asks what would cause his dog's lips to have sores and ulcers. Antibacterial mouth rinses and new dog dishes have been tried, but to no avail. For many types of skin lesions, a scrape or biopsy is often required to accurately diagnose what is going on. This FAQ discusses a group of diseases that can cause lip lesions.

My American Bulldog has a chronic ear fungus that he scratches at and it is infected and keeps filling up with blood. He’s been to the Vet twice this week and now it’s filled up again, his poor ear is sticking straight out. He’s on antibiotics too, any home remedy til we can get back to our Vet?

Thanks so much for your response and I’m sure your post will assist other pet owners. You are correct, it was an aural hematoma and required the surgery described. He is now in a cone with a headwrap and will have that removed on Tuesday, with the sutures removed the following week. Other research I did gives hope that it won’t happen again, and this ear is the only one that had troublesome chronic fungus, the other ear remains treatable by fairly regular (not every day) cleanings. Again, thanks so much for your very helpful website, I’ve bookmarked for future reference as we always have stray animals showing up at our house!
