This is a common problem, and this FAQ addresses tips to a) get your cat back to using the litter box and b) get your cat away from using the "trouble spots" instead of the litter box.

(1) Michael R. Cole says:

Cats sometimes cannot see a potty box unless it is a black box on a white floor. One of my cats has this problem. If it is a white box over a white floor or a light blue floor he gets confused unlike the other cats.

Put a white Bounty paper towel inside the box and slip a white bag over the box. Put the box over a larger black bag that is flat on the floor and then pour in the litter. If this gets the cat to go in the box and occasionally over the edge, then very good.

He could also have problems with worms or subclinical amoebic dysentery whioh is irritating his bowel. One of my other cats had
the lattetr problem causing irritable disposition for 2 years. Both of us got food poisoning from some lunch meat and had to take metronidazole. The metronidazole cleared up a lot of other problems the both of us had. 1/4 tablet (about 62.5 mg ) metronidazole given 3 times a week to a cat that has FIV will turn back the clock on the cat’s by 3 month per dose because of the crud that it kills.
