Pet Food Recall: Possible Salmonella Risk

Monday September 15, 2008
Mars Petcare US, the parent company of Pedigree®, Ol' Roy and other store brands, issued a recall of products manufactured at its Everson, Pennsylvania facility. This facility produces 2.7% of the total Pedigree® production in the US.

The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund. This voluntary recall only affects the United States.

From the Mars Petcare US press release:

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems.

Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Read full press release and see list of recalled foods.

If your pet has consumed any of the foods on the list and is not feeling well or exhibiting signs of vomiting or diarrhea, please consult with your veterinarian immediately. Save all food containers for identification if warranted.

As noted in the press release, humans are also at risk if they have been exposed via cross-contamination with salmonella-infected food. If any humans in the household are not feeling well, please consult with your health care provider as soon as possible.
