Pet Perk: Companies Start Adding Pet Insurance as a Work Benefit

Wednesday January 16, 2008
Medical care and insurance costs continue to rise; causing many companies to scale back their coverage plans offered to employees. While this is bad news for many people out there, it is interesting to note that pet insurance companies are reporting a rise in business from corporate accounts.

Many employers are recognizing the value of pets in people's life (and possible ties to worker efficiency, etc.), and offering this type of insurance policy costs the company nothing. Overall it is a win-win situation for pet owners. How does it work? Unlike traditional insurance policies where the employer bears most or all of the cost, employees pay for all of the pet insurance costs, but receive a discount on the policy for being a member of the group. Hopefully more businesses will check into this new type of employee benefit, and veterinary insurance will be a viable option for more pet owners.

Some insurance policies are good that are for whole life terms and a policy with a yearly limit rather than a per condition limit are better. In some cases people are further ahead with a savings plan for emergencies. But the best of all worlds is preventative natural remedies that prevent disease progression. Great article !!

I already have pet insurance through VPI and have used them for years. As an owner of a giant breed dog, a Newfoundland, I have found them to be the most reasonable given the benefit level provided. Some pet insurance companies surcharge for certain breeds, including Newfs, because of the higher costs of medicine, etc. I also have an excellent wellness rider.

So, I would be disinclined to switch to another company.

I had pet insurance for a while. When my basset hound had surgery and is disabled due to a disc problem, the insurance picked and chose what they were going to cover, so I dropped it.
