BKZONER asks: "I spent most of yesterday searching online for a relatively inexpensive, one-step (no rinse) spray disinfectant to use for my guinea pig's cage. I initially was excited to learn than there are quite a few essential oils that have disinfectant properties, only to find that these oils are found to be hazardous and even lethal to cats (one of which I have), and other pets/animals. Does anyone know of any disinfectants that are, without question, safe for use around both my cat and guinea pig?"

Peroxide….should be safe for anything living. Just don’t use a undiluted food grade with high percentage without diluting with water. It is h2o2!

I owned a dog boarding facility and found “Virkon” to be the best disinfectant on the market. It is being effectively used for the avian flu as well. Its biodegradable so won’t harm the environment.
We had several cases of kennel cough when we first opened but within 3 days after starting to use virkon the kennel cough stopped completely.

TEC-5000 is a effective, animal safe disinfectant and deodorizer. Vets everywhere are switching from Roccal-D. I use this product in my home, because it is so much cheaper than any other disinfectant I’ve found, and I know it is safe for my pets!!!

Health Technology Professional Products makes a product called Eliminator Odor Digester, it will clean, remove the odor (not mask it) and it’s pet friendly.
