Pet Food Recall - Timeline of Events

Thursday April 12, 2007
Many people have been surprised at the scale of the Menu Foods pet food recall. I know I have! The emerging stories have been shocking, sad and confusing with a little intrigue as well. As the story has unfolded, not one but two toxins have been identified; the first being aminopterin and the second melamine. Both of these toxins are chemicals that have no business being in pet food.

Some are now wondering: was it big business that put the toxins in the food?

This recall and the resulting illnesses and deaths of many beloved pets has caused many pet owners to question and research their pet food choices, as indicated in a recent poll on this site. A new poll (see at right) questions the results of those fears: have you changed your pet's diet because of the pet food recall? Please post your comments to the poll and this post below in the Comments section.

This week, get an overview from Franny Syufy, Guide to Cats in this Pet Food Recall Timeline.

As Franny writes: "certainly, during this past month, a number of questions have arisen, which can only (and in some cases are unlikely to) be answered by officials of the companies and government organizations involved. As new events unfold involving the Menu Foods pet food recalls, the sequence of reported recall news in retrospect becomes very interesting. I am providing this pet food recall timeline for information purposes only. My readers can gather their own conclusions."

I know this all happened a year ago. But still, it is disturbing to think that this pet food recall did happen and that it is possible for it to happen again. What guarantees do we have?
