New Toxin Found in Recalled Pet Food

Friday March 30, 2007
In what is becoming a pattern of Friday afternoon press releases (coincidence?), the public learned from several news sources today that the FDA has identified melamine, a chemical used to make plastics and used as a fertilizer in some countries (not in the US), in the Menu Foods recalled pet food.

Last week, the New York State Food Laboratory identified amiopterin as a potential toxin, although sources said they were unsure if it was the only toxin involved in this recall. According to various news reports, Menu Foods has recalled 60 million containers of the suspect food. The FDA has fielded more 8,000 complaints on this recall. (This number of complaints does not include complaints made directly to individual food companies.)

The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) has compiled a list of pet food recall resources for pet owners and veterinarians.
