MEANIECAT asks: "I have a ten year old female cat that is losing hair on her inside of both hind legs and on her back near her tail. I would like to know if it is just the heat. She is eating and drinking water and gets active again at night."

From your Guide: There are many possible causes of hair loss in pets. Some are not serious, and some are. Please have your vet examine your pet to determine the underlying cause and best course of action for your pet.

I have a 13 year old female cat that is experiencing the exact same conditions, hair loss on her hind legs and tail, can anyone tell me what may be the cause. My vet said stress because I got another cat a little over a year ago, it seemed like a valid explanation because she was a little stressed but now that she is comfortable with the new cat she is still losing hair and it makes me worry that it is an underlying medical condition that is causing it… Anybody know??

I have a 9 year old male cat who about 6 months ago starting losing the hair on the inside of his hind legs. Now it’s completely bald, just fuzz left. He’s also started getting bald spots under his arms. The vet checked him out and said it is probably stress or an allergy.

A couple of years ago my 9 year old cat started losing the hair on her back at the top of her tail. I took her to the vet and he said it was most likely a flea allergy. I had recently moved to a new house where he said fleas could have been bought in by construction workers. Even though I never saw fleas, he gave her a shot and I used Advantage for a few months and she totally got all her hair back.

I have a 13 year old cat, she is wormed regularly, given all the correct injections/tablets, and goes to the vet for often check ups. she is very happy and healthy despite her teeth/gums needing to be scraped often… latley though she is going bald on her tummy, in patch like area, and around near her colar. She doesnt seem in pain… what is this fur loss?

Glad I’m not the only one. My cat is 13 and last summer a new feral kitten brought home fleas. But this summer I dont have fleas but the 13yr old cat is losing hair at the tail, hind legs etc. Dont have the $$ to go to the vet. Feeding her organic cooked chicken with carrots and brown rice. Her teeth and gums are bad too which could be part of the problem. Dentisty costs a minimum of $300 and I’m unemployed. So it could be food allergies, cleaners you use on your floor, detergent you use for your bedding, many things.

I have a 2 year old bombay cat. All of a sudden she started losing her hair on her legs.It started out the two hind legs now its all four legs. I brought her to the vet and he said maybe allergies. I am very concerned. The vet has been unable to find out what allergies it could be.
Is this something that is mostly a Bombay cat thing?

My male 9 year old started losing tummy hair about 1 year ago and now he is starting to lose his inside hind leg hair. It’s been very gradual. I suspect it is due to allergies after talking with the vet. Maybe it is something he lays on? I am wondering if other people’s cats may be sitting on areas cleaned with bleach or other harsh cleaners? My cat began to favor sleeping on the bathroom counter about a year ago and that is the only thing I can think of that has changed. Perhaps it’s a new allergy and he is suddenly allergic to his food? Has anyone figured out any possible allergies?

I have a female cat about 13 years old. Nothing has changed in the house. She is not an outdoor cat. She has been fixed and declawed since she was young. I have not changed her diet or litter, yet she has a bald spot on both of her front paws and the skin seems normal. What could it be?

My 5 year old cat is losing hair on tail near her rear end, on her rear and on the back o0f her legs. It has been very gradual. For the past year she has been sleeping on the satelite receiver. I wonder if that could be the cause? Anyone else with similar situation?

I recently came home from a vacation of about a week and a half and found my cat to be losing fur near her tail on her back. She’s thirteen years old and shouldn’t be stressed out due to the fact that nothing has changed for over a year. She also has no flees. I’ve seen her licking and nibbling her back. For a while she seemed to be a little sensitive when petting there but since then, she hasn’t seemed to mind. Is it just old age or something to be more worried about?

My cat looks as though it had been caught in a trap. the hair is not falling out but much shorter from the center of his tail to 3 inches from the tip. It is weird because I have not seen and difference in his actions but it looks as though it is expanding on that area. He looks healthy and I am concerned because it is getting larger. I’m unemployed and cannot afford the $100. plus vet fee. I do not think he was caught in a trap. Just looks weird!

I have 3 cats, a 9yr old tomcat, a little girl who is almost a year old, and a 7yr old girl cat. the nine year old is just barely showing it but around his tail the hair is getting to be like peach fuzz. The seven year old had bald spots around her hind legs and back, and my little girl has the peach fuzz from her the middle of her tail down her hind legs and up to the middle of her back. It happened so fast I though someone had shaved her but it can’t be as it is happening to the other two. I am broke and can’t afford to go to the vet again after my 9yr old broke his leg. If anyone can help I would love anything I could get.

I have a female cat 5 years and is down to peach fuzz on both inner back legs & under rear of belly. She sleeps with another cat also female every night and plays during the day the other cat is fine nothing wrong at all… They eat the same food drink the same water same flea meds same bath date ??? Only thing I could think of is we did switch the cat food used after years of using the same one, we switched to an indoor cat formula. because it’s supposed to help with hair balls, I am switching back to the original food today and will be taking the cat to the vet Sunday. I will post anything I find out from the visit and from the food test.

I have a 10 year old cat called Sam. Over the past month and a half he’s lost most of the hair on his lower tummy and the inside of his hind legs. He’s always been a bit of a groomer, but he hasn’t been grooming himself more than normal. His food has not changed and the environment hasn’t changed. He doesn’t have fleas and the skin looks really healthy underneath the peach fuzz. Can anyone help me. He doesn’t seem different, he’s still the same lazy and affectionate cat as he’s always been….

I have an 8 year old part persian bobtail that is beginning to lose hair on the inside of her back legs and the tail area. I just noticed a little bit a christmas time and began giving her anti itch and an antibiotic from Foster and Smith. But she has not improved and I will be taking her to the vet the next time I get paid. I think it is sad when older animals can’t get insurance. I purchased a 9 month old chocolate poodle last fall. When I went into Bansfield, they said he was too old for the spay and neuter discount. I can imagine what someone would say about Kittybob. And being retired, it is hard to toss out 300 cash to a vet. That is how much it cost me the last time I took her in for a checkup–she had hairballs and the vet told me to put her on hairball formula food. That was the treatment! Then some of us who don’t take our pets in yearly get criticized. There is no justice for us or the pets! LindaLou in TX

My cat is somewhere over 10 years old and in remission for lymphoma. They shaved her belly to remove a stomach tumor last year and the fur never grew back – she also lost all her whiskers from the chemo. She is doing well, but I am noticing her aging. She seems more fragile. In the last couple months, her fur has thinned a lot on the backs of her hind legs and under her chin/on her neck. Nothing has changed for stress, fleas, or anything else. I think it might just be part of aging for her. She was a beautiful, puffy kitty before. She’s kind of motley now, but I still think she’s the prettiest, sweetest, best kitty ever. It’s tough to watch her decline…
