Insect Repellent for Cats?

Tuesday June 1, 2004
PEARLMAAM asks: "Every summer, my cat's ears get covered with whitish spots, which he scratches until they bleed. I took him to an allergist/dermatologist, who said they were insect bites. I've been trying to come up with something I could put on him as an insect repellent that wouldn't hurt him. Does anyone have any experience with this, or any advice? I'd appreciate it."

My cat has the same problem with her nose. Did you ever find a solution?

Try a web search for pet insect repellant. Or check your local pet store. Most places like PetSmart carry animal safe bug spray that can be applied directly to your cat or dog.

I’m interested in this answer too… I’ve had many cats in my life but poor Cali has mosquitos swarming her ears every time she goes outside, and the bites scab and bleed. I just put neosporin on one bad area and hope that helps. If I find an answer on this I’ll let you know – so far the advise seems to be to try petsmart for an animal safe bug spray.

You are all likely talking about mosquito bite sensitivity which is very common in outdoor cats whenever mosquitoes are present. Try searching for “mosquito repellent for cats” – there is an excellent product from Virbac that is helpful to heal the wounds and repel the bugs.

Folks, please leave off with the “search the Web” comments. You might as well write “figure it out for yourself!”
