The Quandary of Veterinary Medicine
Tuesday August 12, 2003
It is often a "rock and a hard place" position for a veterinarian when a sick or injured animal needs a lab work up or medical care, and the owners cannot afford the recommended option. Yes, veterinarians love animals and yes, they want to do all that they can, but there are real costs in doing so. Forum member KELJO09 has this to say: "I think these posts illustrate the great quandary of veterinary medicine today--how to balance the need to make a decent living without pricing out of the range of most clients, very few of whom have pet insurance. With vet medicine, we tend to look at the price, and think wow, that's a lot, somebody's getting rich off my pet's suffering. But, the same procedure in human medicine costs ten times more, and we don't blink because insurance or government aid pays for it."
